Good Flick.
I just finished watching the film The Orphanage. As a real big fan of horror movies I must say that I already know that this film will be one of my favorites. Two things that really scare me in movies are children and old woman and this film had both. The ghost of Thomas was really frightening with the sack on his head and his deformed face. The part when he appears in the hallway and Laura thinks it's Simon had me on the edge of my seat. The old woman Benigna was really scary especially when she was found creeping in the shed. The part that really made me jump twice was when she was hit by the speeding van and then again when you thought she was dead then grabs Laura's wrist. I like when movies introduce something small, maybe a quote or an object that you might not take notice to at all, then they bring it back and make it relevant in the end. This movie had a lot of that. Some examples are the lighthouse light, the Peter Pan story, and when Simon asks again at the end of the film "can I wake up?" However, i felt the ending of the film was really confusing the first time. I had to go back and try to understand it better. I hadn't realized that the flashback of her in the closet meant that she had accidentally trapped Simon in the basement and that the strange noises in the house were of Simon trying to escape. This film used a lot of classic horror techniques that really made the film work. Low angles and dark corners were seen a lot but I have to say that the scariest thing was the music. Music is what can make a movie really scary. A good example of this is the original Halloween. If you took the music away from the film. It wouldn't be half as scary as the finished product. All in all, I really enjoyed this film and it was a perfect example of good horror genre.

I agree with you, its such a good example of a good horror film.I was really excited to watch this in our course because it was one of my favorite horror films. Its subtle with its horror elements and the ending to me is brilliant,It really keeps the viewer guessing, and if you watch it a second time you'll notice the little things you missed the first time that make the ending more clear.
